You are taken to Holland America Line's cruise ship ms Volendam for a 7-night Inside Passage cruise to Alaska.
Enter a region so isolated it can only be accessed by sea or air. Come face-to-face with the grandeur of the Ice Ages you slowly glide past a maze of bays, glacier-carved fjords, channels and waterways protected from the open sea by islands and other land masses. Your ship is designed for Alaskan cruising with its airy lounges, teak decks and roomy verandas, allowing for comfortable observation of the ever-changing panorama of unspoiled virgin forests and vast wilderness that stretch all the way from British Columbia to Alaska.
Weather permitting, cruise Tracy Arm, a narrow 26-mile-long fjord, where the lush rainforest recedes to reveal a stunning canyon of bare rock. The panorama of 7,000-foot mountain peeks and nearly vertical rock cliffs is astounding. Waterfalls appear at every turn. Icebergs make their way to the sea in all sorts of wondrous shapes. And tucked away at the end of this remarkable waterway are two very active reminders of the Ice Age - the twin Sayer Glaciers, calving icebergs into the jade-coloured inland sea. Kittiwakes, mountain goats and seals are a common sight. Whales and bears may even make an appearance in this magical place. Your first Alaskan port-of-call is Juneau, a place to let your imagination run wild. Stop in rustic shops offering jade and ivory sculptures, silver jewellery, wooden masks, intricate beadwork and apparel designed by Native Alaskans. Visit Gold Rush-era bars such as the Alaska Hotel with ornate Victorian furnishings, or the Red Dog Saloon showcasing Wyatt Earp's gun.
Few one-time boomtowns retain the flavour of the Gold Rush days and remain an important link to Alaska's rich history like Skagway. This gateway to the Klondike is preserved at The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park with its restored frontier-style storefronts and rustic wooden boardwalks that invite you to take a stroll into the past. Take your time and poke into every little store from the Trail Bench to Lynch & Kennedy's Dry Goods. The Red Onion Saloon, with its honky-tonk piano and costumed barmaids, is a treasure trove of memorabilia. To complete the picture of those rip-roaring days, visit the nostalgic Trail of 98' Museum, or ride the antique White Pass & Yukon narrow-gauge railway up through silvery-purple rock faces, past Deadhorse Gulch, to see what it was like back then.
In the watery wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park, behold a landscape at its literal moment of creation. Your ship becomes a time machine as you travel thousands of years back in time, witnessing the life cycle of a new land from Sitka-spruce forest alive with grizzlies and wolves, to the algae, lichens and mosses that were the beginnings of life in the region. In this isolated land, the shrill noises of modern life are replaced with the deep, thunderous boom of building-size icebergs calving into the sea from vast rivers of ice. It is raw, primordial and unforgettable.
Welcome to the salmon capital of the world! Part of the town is built along a steep hillside; part is built on pilings over the water where bald eagles watch from waterside perches. An outstanding collection of totem poles makes the town an essential stop for anyone interested in native art. To make the most of your time ashore, consider taking an optional guided tour through town, a harbour cruise or a float plane flightseeing excursion. If you prefer a more hands-on experience, you can take a sport fishing charter, kayak expedition, jeep ride or mountain excursion on a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The adventure never stops.
Today is a day of relaxation as you cruise back to Vancouver through the famed Inside Passage. Relax and take advantage of your ship's superb facilities, or simply relax on deck with a drink and watch the unmatched scenery glide by your luxurious floating resort.
