Brief Summary / Interesting Facts/ Interesting Destinations: Cathay Pacific was founded in September 1946 by an American Roy C. Farrell and an Australian Sydney H. de Kantzow, when each man invested HK$1 to register the airline. They named it Cathay Pacific because Cathay was the ancient name given to China and their dream that one day they would fly across the Pacific Ocean. Cathay Pacific was the first airline to operate the world's first non-stop transpolar flight over the North Pole in July 1998. It is a founding member of the Oneworld alliance. Cathay Pacific is parent company to subsidiary airline Dragonair. Cathay Pacific has been rated as a 5 star airline by Skytrax in 2009 and has won several coveted Skytrax awards including Airline of the Year 2009, Best First Class Airline 2008, Best First Class Catering 2008 and Airline of the Year award runner-up 2008. The Cathay Pacific fleet of aircraft are fitted out with up to 3 classes, depending on the route. These include economy, business and first class.
