Brief Summary / Interesting Facts/ Interesting Destinations: Singapore Airlines was originally founded in 1947, when it was known as Malayan Airways. In 1963, when the Federation of Malaysia was born, the airline became known as Malaysian Airways. In 1966, the name was changed to Malaysia-Singapore Airlines. The airline was eventually split into two entities - Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines. Singapore Airlines history proudly boasts a number of firsts: the first airline to offer complimentary drinks and headsets; the first airline to operate an international commercial flight across the Pacific Ocean; the first airline with a global sky telephone service, known as the KrisFone; the first airline to operate the world's longest non-stop commercial flight from Singapore to Los Angeles in February 2004, then later that year Singapore Airlines surpassed their own record with a non-stop service from Singapore to New York (Newark). Most recently, Singapore Airlines was the first airline to take delivery of the Airbus Superjumbo - the A380-800 - the world's first true twin deck aircraft. Singapore Airlines' first A380-800 flight was on 25 October 2007 from Singapore to Sydney. Today Singapore Airlines strive to provide quality service through innovation. Singapore Airlines was named Skytrax Airline of the Year in 2004, 2007 & 2008. In 2009, the airline was recognised by Skytrax as having the Best First Class as well as the Best First Class Onboard Catering. Singapore Airlines is rated as a 5 star airline by Skytrax. Singapore Airlines has one of the youngest fleet of aircraft in the world. Singapore Airlines also operates SilkAir, a wholly owned subsidiary, to regional destinations with smaller capacity requirements.
