Description:

Antigua is an island of the West Indies, located in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean region.

Antigua is an island surrounded by clear turquoise water with high rocky coastlines which form excellent harbors and sandy beaches. The highest point on the island is to the southwest of the island atop of Boggy Peak at 1,319 feet.

Antigua enjoys a very pleasant tropical climate which remains warm and relatively dry throughout the year. Tropical storms and hurricanes may occur between June and November.

The origin of the name Antigua is still unknown. For many years it was claimed this was the name given to these island by Christopher Columbus in honor of Santa Maria La Antigua Cathedral in Seville, this however was proven to be incorrect and the name still remains a mystery.

The Antiguans are crazy for cricket and it has long been the major sport played on the island. To the south of the island you will find the Antiguan Recreation Ground home to many sporting land marks including the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

Antigua's capital is St. John and it is home to over 31,000 people which is almost half of the population. This has led to St. John becoming the most developed and cosmopolitan municipalities in the Lesser Antilles. The city has now become famous for its various shopping malls and boutiques throughout the city.
